The stairs and steps are fine but the width of the product is made for petite pets. My dog niece is a Rottie Shepherd mix and she is wide and tall. So I bought two of these and put them together so she can walk up them onto the bed when I dog sit. I recommend them but buy two if your family member is not a toy poodle. This is the second one I have bought. Really for my small dogs to get up on my high bed .Like other reviewers we had come to that sad place in our lives when it was obvious that our 17 lb Pomeranian needed help getting on and off the bed. He is 11 now, still extremely fit and active and is a terrific athlete but had an accident last year jumping too enthusiastically off the bed and slamming into another piece of furniture. I had made many starts and stops in this direction to solve the problem. We do have a fairly high bed and I had started with just a box for an intermediary step but that did not work. Finally after looking at many pet stairs I settled on the Brinkman. Eddie does not like stairs in general, perhaps because our's from first to second floor are just wood and going down them are hard for him. So introducing another set of stairs to him provided another challenge. For a few days he would do his best to avoid the new Brinkman stairs. Now he uses them daily going up onto the bed and off without coaching, and we never used to treats to encourage him to incorporate them into his routine. I am very relieved that he seems to recognize that these stairs greatly enhance his life as he is not putting pressure on his hips by jumping on and off the high bed.I like the stairs because they are light, are covered by a soft and removable, washable cover and relatively attractive. I had not discovered that it was only corrugated cardboard under the material but glad to know this as it might have deterred me from making the purchase as to the product's longevity.I agree with the lab owner who says the staris are too small for a large dog. Even our dog at 17 pounds I notice approaching these stairs with caution, taking his time to manage each step for fear of falling off. They do seem narrow and not deep or wide enough. The set with one more step would have been more useful because for at least a week as the top of the stair did not come to the top of bed there was always uncertainty that he could jump up from that last step, more like a large reach from the stair to the bed. Perhaps it was the puffy bedding that made it seem treacherous but it just didn't seem high enough. In summary I am delighted that we have solved the problem of Eddie jumping on and off the bed. I even notice that he easily uses the stairs in the middle of the night to get a drink of water. I can hear him go down the stairs, drink the water ( we have a bowl of fresh water in the bedroom) and then use the stairs to get back on the bed. This convinces me that he has completely adjusted to them and also recognizes their benefit and is not just using them in our presence to appease us.However, I would caution anyone with a larger dog to perhaps consider a sturdier, larger, wider set because if I were a large dog I would find these stairs too light, perhaps flimsy, too narrow and unmanageable for the weight of anything larger than perhaps 20-25 lbs. We don't have a cat, but I would imagine a cat would not find a problem with these stairs and would prefer this Brinkman set as to one that did not provide the soft cover. The stairs are very sturdy, made of cardboard and draped in soft carpet. Took my 2 chihuahua's a few days to learn to use them because they were used to a homemade ramp. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is the carpet, over time, has become worn. Their toenails will get slightly stuck on a piece and it will pull the carpet fibers. The carpet has a zipper and it's easily washed. They are really good stairs and I've actually used them to stand on once and they held my weight, 235lbs.My 6 # chihuahua can now get up on my platform bed n I don't have to worry about her hurting her legs. She uses it constantlyLook, if you don't think of your dogs as family, then just skip this product review. Of course, if you're pondering buying steps for a dog, then you are likely a dog lover, anyway, so that may be a needless warning. What's the warning? I write this review with a bias. Big one. I admit it.My dogs are beloved. Not spoiled, but I may be pushing the edge of the envelope there. I'm very picky about all things Dog. Which is how I came to buy these stairs.Having already lost one canine friend to old age and liver cancer, I'm all too aware these days that my pups are getting older. The grey on the oldest one's snout makes me sad: not that he cares, it just means one more treat for him whenever I notice the ever-increasing grey and white fur. However, couple of months ago, I really starting thinking about the baby pup. She makes a heroic effort every evening to jump up on the bed, but with her little legs it's quite the feat. I realize that as she gets older, this is going to become a problem. I've also been wondering how good it was now, for her to jump up as high as she is long. It's very impressive, but probably not too good for those hip joints and things. Then, I noticed she was taking a bit of time before that jump - evaluating it. Something she never used to do. Was it painful for her to leap? Was she feeling stiff? So, I hit the web to research the best way to help her out. Stairs vs. ramp. Decided to start out with stairs. Next question: what size of stairs, what number of stairs. Carpeted? Wooden? Foldable? After lots more time than I'd like to admit, I decided on the Brinkmann Pet Deluxe Pet Steps - 3 Step. It was a great decision.1. The steps have a handle, so you can easily tote them - use them for the car, the bed, etc.2. They are a good size for the dog, not too big (or too high) a step for little legs to take.3. They don't take up too much floorspace.4. They are lightweight, but still sturdy enough that the dogs trust them to hold their weight. The first night after the Brinkman Pet Steps arrived, my pup was going up and down that staircase like a beauty pageant contender. No learning curve here, though the bits of bacon on the steps for the first couple of rounds might have been a big help. The pups think they're fun, and I've got the reassurance that if the little one was feeling some angst about reaching middle age and facing that huge leap to get on the bed, well - that's gone. In the years ahead, I'm comforted to know that we have already got the Brickman Steps in place, training done, before arthitis or hip issues or other old age problems develop.I highly recommend this product.- Reba KennedyExactly what we needed and sturdy enough for our spaniel. Occasionally will tip slightly when our pick treads right on the edge but not a huge drama. We got this as our dog is recovering from ACL surgery and we are trying to discourage him jumping up - these are just the right thing.I bought these steps to help my ageing Burmese get on and off my lap as I am sitting in my chair. Her mobility has been decreasing recently and she was finding it difficult to not be with me. Now, the most loving kitty in the world has her autonomy back and can easily navigate up and down these well-made steps! These are solid construction, I have already removed the cover to make sure it will be easy to look after and even that has exceeded my expectations. The non-slip pads on the bottom are working great even with my slippery hardwood floor! The above is a picture of my kitty, moments after I set the steps down. Let SNUGGLE TIME resume!Just needed something so my frenchie/boston mix could get on, and off, my bed (without me having to lift him all the time). Used treats to get him using the stairs for the first few days. Within a week, he was going up and down without being coaxed. The stairs were assembled....are extremely light....and easy to move. Excellent product!
